"Give scientists skin in the game in the projects they actually work on." — Vivek Ramaswamy

He is running for president, so most of this is politics. Underneath it is a working playbook: how he found drugs everyone else walked away from, why he gives the people doing the work real upside, and how he earns attention instead of buying it.

TACTIC 01

Buy What Others Abandoned For The Wrong Reasons

He noticed big pharma systematically shelved whole categories of drugs, not because the science failed, but because of career risk: people only take the same risks their competitors take. So he in-licensed abandoned drugs in early development "for pennies on the dollar." Five of the drugs he worked on were FDA approved, and the company became a $10 billion public company that returned over a billion dollars to shareholders before going public.

THE PLAY

Hunt for assets others walked away from for non-economic reasons like career or reputational risk, and acquire them cheap.

TACTIC 02

Give The People Doing The Work Real Upside

The core of the model was to "give scientists skin in the game in the projects they actually work on." In big pharma, the scientist who develops a drug has asymmetric downside and no real upside in that specific drug, so nobody takes risk. He flipped the incentive.

THE PLAY

Give the operators closest to the work direct upside in the specific thing they are building, not just a salary.

TACTIC 03

Keep The Company On Its Mission

His view is that companies "should focus on making products and services for people who need them without apologizing for it," and that a worthy mission stuck to is how you maximize value. Bolt-on social agendas dilute it.

THE PLAY

Keep the company pointed at its actual mission. A clear, worthy mission does more for morale and value than added-on causes.
