Shaan Puri, My First Million
Concentrated Bets Make Rich People. Diversification Keeps Them Rich.
Seek small bets with huge upside and work with the best people early on.
Shaan Puri says
You want to look for opportunities where you have either asymmetric information or asymmetric upside as a general rule of thumb for how you invest. Asymmetric upside is when you invest a small amount, like a hundred dollars in a startup, the most you can lose is that hundred dollars, but if it wins it could be 100x or a thousand x returns. The first 10 years of your career, just go work with the smartest, highest energy, most resourceful people you can find, go into emerging markets or exciting fields, and try to do exciting work with exciting people.
Try this
List where you have real edge today, then look for one asymmetric opportunity in that area instead of spreading bets thin.
